Melbourne-based jockey Daniel Moor declared his 2016 Coolmore Classic ride this weekend Vergara as “fit and sound” after travelling to Sydney to partner her in a Tuesday morning track gallop this week.

Rarely seen in Sydney, Victorian Moor was more than happy with the feel the Anthony Cummings-trained Vergara gave him when he jumped on the five-year-old’s back for the first time for the 1200m piece of work.

Cummings’ Snippetson mare is one of 19 nominees for Saturday’s $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens, Vergara having a strong gallop at Randwick ahead of the elite level test.

On the Kensington track she cruised over her final 400m finishing in 24.3 seconds with Moor in the saddle, Vergara on Saturday shooting for her first win since the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) at Wyong last September.

“She was good,” Moor said according to Racenet.

“That’s the first time I’ve sat on her and she gave me a nice and happy feel.

“She just ticked over, doing what was required but she feels very fit and sound.

“She pulled up great in the wind and I’m looking forward to getting back aboard her on Saturday.”

Vergara has had two runs this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival for two fourths at Randwick in Group company.

The first saw her beaten three lengths by Sultry Feeling on February 13 in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) before her two and a quarter length effort behind the Gerald Ryan-trained Solicit on Blue Diamond Stakes Day in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m).

Vergara had James McDonald aboard for both runs, Moor his replacement on the weekend with Vergara dropping from 54kg last start to just 51kg in the quality handicap conditions of the Coolmore Classic.

Guy Walter Stakes winner Solicit leads all-in Coolmore Classic betting at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4.80 despite going up from 54kg to 56kg this weekend.

She is followed closely in the markets by the undefeated John O’Shea-trained Surround Stakes winning filly Ghisoni ($5) and the Ciaron Maher-trained Mannerism Stakes winner Azkadellia ($5.50).

Vergara meanwhile is rated a $35 outsider in the latest Coolmore Classic odds.

Upsets in the race for fillies and mares are not uncommon however and notable recent roughies to salute include Plucky Belle ($15 in 2015), Alverta ($16 in 2010) and Eskimo Queen ($20 in 2008).

Moor hopes to be aboard another upset Coolmore Classic winner in Vergara on Saturday, the lightweight hoop saying a good barrier draw was crucial.

“If she can draw a nice gate with that weight, she’s pitchforked into the race,” he said.

“She takes up a forward spot so with nothing on her back she can really give them something to catch.

“The weight is easy enough for me. I haven’t had to ride that light since I was in Mauritius last season but I ride 54 (kg) every day of the week and I won’t have any problems.”
